Mabvuku defend chess title

Mabvuku High school successfully defended their Maflicg Mazowe chess festival crown in a tournament held at Mazowe High school last weekend.

Munyaradzi Thom, Trevor Macheka, Solomon Chimuzura and Phillip Jekera, walloped all their opponents in a five-round Swiss tourney. On their way back to the top, Mabvuku dismissed Prince Edward and Howard. In the last round, they defeated Zengeza.

Harare High school came second with four wins and a draw, followed by the Mazowe High A team, while Prince Edward came fourth, tied on the third position but with inferior board points compared to Mazowe.

The eventual champions’ Munyaradzi Thom was the best player on Board One, Sean from Harare High school the best on Board Two and Solomon Chimuzura the best on Board Three with a perfect score.

Avondale School were the best primary school in the tournament – winning three of the five games they played against the secondary schools. The Paratema twins Bollard and Billard performed well for the team, as did little Rumbidzai Mawire. In the girls division, Harare’s Dominican Convent ruled the roost out of the 22 teams that took part. The tournament winners received chess books, chess sets, digital clocks, demo boards and cash.
