The champions enthralled their fans with victory over a bitter enemy who had floored them in another high-profile pre-season encounter only two weeks earlier. But that alone cannot camouflage Mandigora’s continuing struggles to come up with a consistent line-up that maximises the collective strengths of his personnel.
The Dynamos gaffer is still to settle on a first choice left-back, first choice right-back and the picture on the wings remains equally hazy. This is despite the fact that the season should have already started were it not for a last minute postponement.
Mandigora has two talented left-backs in Qadr Amin and Ocean Mushure. Unable to settle on one, on Sunday he played both, with Amin deployed further afield on the left of midfield. He faces the same predicament on right side of defence, where Godknows Murwira played ahead of last season’s Young Player of the Year Blessing Moyo.
Up-front, the Dynamos gaffer is still to decide where exactly to fit in Kelvin Bulaji, who looks a bit overwhelmed by his new setting.
It is only in the heart of defence where the situation has been a lot more predictable, with Sydney Linyama taking over from the departed Ndlovu to form what could be another fruitful partnership with captain Augustine Mbara.
The return of Ronald Chitiyo has added some much needed creativity, but Walter Mukanga barely looks capable of partly shouldering responsibilities in the crucial midfield department.
With players like Carlos Rusere, Cliff Sekete and young Brett Amidu still available, Mandigora has some room to spice up thinks during the season.
