
His feat became the fourth time in school history that the Coe College wrestling programme has featured a National Champion. Sewera joined that elite club on Saturday night,when he beat fourth-seeded Tyler Schneider of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
The little-known Zimbabwean, who had won two previous meetings with Schneider, opened the scoring with a takedown in the opening minute, but Schneider escaped. Sewera ended the first period with a 2-1 lead and chose bottom to start the second.
Just 23 seconds into the second period, Sewera escaped for a 3-1 lead, which to 5-1 with 28 seconds left in the period, as he recorded his second takedown. Schneider trimmed the lead to 5-2 to end the period with an escape in the final seconds.
Sewera started the third period on top, as Schneider escaped five seconds into the period, leaving Sewera with a 5-3 lead.
With 54 seconds left, Sewera recorded his third takedown, extending the lead to 7-3. Sewera held Schneider down for 15 seconds before he escaped. Sewera sealed the deal with a takedown with 22 seconds left and rode out Schneider for the win.
Sewera is nephew to Larissa Bakasa, a former Zimbabwean athlete and Conference USA and All American Champion.
“We are losing a lot of potential for the country as people don't know the great athletes we have,” said an elated Bakasa earlier in the week.
