The secretary of the tournament’s organising committee Michael Mahachi said they had scheduled the tournament to go along with the Easter holidays in order to attract a huge crowd.
“This is a tournament for the whole family and we want families to attend. So we have made sure the tournament runs along with the Easter holidays so that families will be able to attend,” said Mahachi.
They had received a huge response and it would be bigger and better, if not the biggest Zimbabwe Open tournament since its inception in 1984, he added. After a seven-year absence, the Zimbabwe Open returned in 2010, but Zimbabwean golfers have failed to make an impression, and South African golfers have dominated the event since then.
Once again, Zimbabwe will be looking to the likes of Tongoona Charamba, Ryan Cairns, Sheldon Steyn, Dale Howie, Greg Bentley and Micky Hough to bring back the good old days when Zimbabweans dominated the richest golfing event in the country.
South Africa’s Jbe Kruger is the reigning champion and Mahachi confirmed that the golfer is on his way to Zimbabwe to defend his title. Kruger also won in at the re-launch in 2010.
Once again Delta Beverages through their Golden Pilsener brand have extended their sponsorship of the competition.
