The 25-year-old, born in Zimbabwe but now resident in South Africa, said he wanted to switch nationalities and play for Zimbabwe at the
2016 Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
“The Olympic Games in 2016 and the World Cup of Golf would be a massive opening for me. I hope to partner Brendon de Jonge and make Zimbabwe proud,” said Burmester, who added that he was looking forward to receiving a congratulatory message from De Jonge on his Zimbabwe Open win.
De Jonge, who won the 2012 Zimbabwe Sportsperson of the Year Award, is based in Virgina, USA and plays in the highly-competitive US PGA Tour.
Burmester said he would soon be applying for Zimbabwean citizenship, so as to make himself available for selection for Zimbabwe for both the Olympic Games and other international engagements, most importantly, the World Cup of Golf.
