Chitungwiza land dispute turns ugly

Violence erupted in the Manyame Park phase 4 recently between MDC-T and Zanu (PF) youths over illegal land allocations.

The MDC-T youth activists are accused of destroying a one-roomed building belonging to Zanu (PF) member Norman Kuzanga. They were accused of having used a hoe and rake to bring the structure down to window level and the roof of the building caved inwards causing damage to property worth $330.

Eye witnesses said Zanu (PF) youths working in cahoots with members of the police assaulted MDC-T youths. They have reportedly been told by their superiors to occupy any open space which is available for them to build their houses.

Meanwhile, this reporter witnessed a Zanu (PF) activist identified as BaMhizha unlawfully pegging stands near the Manyame Park Complex and phase 4 corner shops. “We are giving ourselves stands as per our resolution in our party and we will deal with whosoever goes against it accordingly,” he said.

Chitungwiza City Council Town Clerk George Makunde blasted the youths saying it was illegal. He promised that the law will take its course to address the issue.

It has also been established that some of the youths who are leading the illegal distribution of land are employed by the council. “I understand that some of our employees are leading the illegal distribution of stands and some are even trying to occupy stands that were bought by other people. Let me warn those guys that they are going to face internal disciplinary action,” said Makunde

Late last year residents in various housing settlements had their houses demolished by the government after claims that the stands were at undesignated places. It is therefore surprising why government continues to fold its arms when ruling party youths are repeating the same thing over again.

Residents suspect that the issue of illegal land allocations in the dormitory town is being masterminded by powerful politicians in government.
