Laughable allegations

Had this been a court of law, any judge, any jury would have laughed at the allegations, if not at the accusers. If there is any sense to the charge of sabotaging Mugabe in 2008, any reasonable person might ask why the President kept Mujuru as his deputy for the eight years that followed.

Mujuru is accused of abusing party structures to create a centre of power. Mugabe fiddled with the party’s rules to facilitate his wife’s rise to the influential politburo. He amended Zanu (PF)’s constitution on a whim and without the requisite notice period.

His wife’s face appeared on state owned Zupco buses and she buzzed from province to province, like a fidgety dragonfly, using a government helicopter, dolling out grain and fertilizer that was probably acquired by questionable means.

Mrs Mugabe – then a rankless member of the party – commandeered the national broadcaster, hurled abuse at a member of the country’s Presidium and insulted senior party officials, without once offering a grain of evidence for the allegations she made. If that is not ‘abuse of structures’ by Mugabe then the Epworth balancing rocks are a stack of hot cross buns.
