Trans African Concessions (Trac) N4 spokesperson Solange Soares-Nicolson said she could not comment on reports that the Lebombo border in Mpumalanga had been closed.
"We [only] manage the N4 route which runs through the border. There have been reports that protesters about four kilometres from Ressano Garcia [at the border] were attacking South African registered vehicles," she said.
"We have dispatched our team there to keep us posted. We are advising road users to avoid the area at this stage."
Mpumalanga police could not be immediately reached to confirm the border's closure.
The Corridor Gazette reported that all vehicles had been stopped from crossing the post for their own safety after about 200 Mozambicans barricaded the N4 in Mozambique.
It could not be immediately established whether the alleged attacks were in retaliation to recent xenophobic violence that flared up in Durban, Pietermaritzburg and parts of Johannesburg and left five people dead and scores injured and displaced.
