Star-studded squad for Zone 4 Champs

The Zimbabwe Boxing Federation said this week it was ready to roar at the Zone 4 Championships to be held in South Africa on April 21-25.

This follows the selection of a provisional star-studded squad at the just-ended national boxing tournament, held at the Gibbo Stadium in Triangle last weekend. The championships will be used as qualifiers for the 11th All Africa Games, slated for Congo–Brazzaville in September.

Among those selected are former Zimbabwe Youth Games gold medallist Brilard Tinago, likely to be the torch-bearer of the team. Last year’s Zone 4 Games silver medallist, Phillimon Hungwe is expected to add depth to the squad that also has star female boxers like Wadzanai Nldovu, Liberty Muwani, Future Maziya, Partson Mutengwa and Vincent Chishaya.

ZBF secretary general, Goodwill Sibanda said a full list of the team would be released after an assessment of the Zimbabwe National Army boxers, who missed the national tournament.

“We are ready and raring to go, although we still need to make some final touches to the squad,” said Sibanda. “The provisional side that we selected should be able to bring back several success stories. We are continuing with the assessment, where we will include some army boxers that could not make the tournament due to their internal programmes.”

He added that one more national tournament would be conducted to assess the army pundits before departure for the regional event.

Petros Masiyambumbi, the ZBF Technical Director, declared that Zimbabwe would be the team to beat at both the coming championships and the All-Africa-Games due to vast experience and boxing tactfulness of the selected team.
