A Government in Denial

Chinamasa believes $30 million is ‘very little money’. For that amount, he could build 1 500 low cost houses. For that amount, he could buy 6 million 5kg bags of maize meal to feed the millions who are likely to need food aid later this year.

For $30 million, he could settle the debt owed by the Grain Marketing Board to local farmers or he could pay the salaries of 75,000 nurses. So what exactly does Chinamasa mean when he says ‘little money?’

The first step towards fixing a problem is admitting there is a problem. For as long as we all pretend that everything is fine, Zimbabwe’s lifeless economy will remain in its crypt. – Till next week, my pen is capped. Jerà
