He served as energy minister during the 2009-2013 unity government and is being charged with criminal abuse of office.

Mangoma is being represented by Beatrice Mtetwa, a human rights lawyer and turned himself in yesterday morning before being locked up.

Police say Mangoma illegally ordered the managing director of the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) to cancel a tender for the sale of prepaid electricity tokens and award it to OK Zimbabwe without going to tender.

MDC Renewal spokesperson Jacob Mafume has condemned Mangoma’s arrest.

“This is a criminal abuse of the police force to settle scores by people who were not awarded tenders,” said Mafume.

Mangoma has been arrested by the police on two other occasions, being charged with corruption, but the charges did not stick.
