Masvingo residents bash cops

The war between kombi drivers, police and municipal officers has taken an ugly twist culminating in serious accidents and the death of five people. Kombi drivers have been forced to flee municipal police officers trying to throw spikes onto their tyres.

“Generally, spikes can cause tyre bursts and have historically been used on fleeing criminals. Residents have called on the relevant authorities to re-consider their actions given the increase in kombi accidents and the recent deaths,” says a statement from the Masvingo Residents Trust.

Three Masvingo City Council police officers were beaten by residents yesterday at Pick and Pay Shop for throwing spikes at taxies that transport residents from town to Rujeko, Mucheke, Majange and Runyaro west.

“The public is increasingly losing patience at the rate at which kombis are being involved in accidents. The issue has raised a double-headed argument with some blaming the authorities and others blaming the rowdy kombi drivers. However, MRT have called for the police to come out clear instead of making indirect comments with regards to that because lives are now at stake,” says the statement.
