Spies leads trainer standings

Three months before the curtain comes down on the racing season, Cornie Spies leads the trainers standings with total stakes money of $215, 978.

According to statistics released by the Mashonaland Turf Club, Spies has a seven percent winning form coupled with a 15 % rating in placings. So far, she has had 30 wins, 26 second placings and 29 third places. All in all, she has raced in 433 events and finished fourth on 25 of those.

Spies finished sixth in the 2014 season when Lisa Harris ended as the champion trainer, followed by Kirk Swanson, Ghokan Terzi and Amy Bronkhorst, with Alyson Wright in between.

Although she leads Terzi by a massive $73, 933, Terzi has had limited appearances of only 162 runs for a total of $142, 045 in stake money.

In fact, Terzi has a better record of a 14% in winning form and 27 % in placings. In those 162 runs, Terzi has had 23 winners, finished second nine times, and third in 15 races. He has had 20 horses in fourth place.

Trainer standings are determined by total stake money accumulated irrespective of the number of races the trainer would have taken part in.

Champion trainer Lisa Harris is in fifth position, having participated in 110 races that notched $74, 839 after 11 wins, 16 second places, 12 third and 14 fourth placings for a winning form of 10 % and 38 % in placings.

After graduating in March, new kid on the trainers’ block, Bridget Stidolph is in seventh position, just behind Wright, with $59, 681 in 73 races for a winning form of 10% and 36% in placings. Gavin Macleod, who is not a regular racer, occupies the last position out of the 11 trainers, with only two fourth placings in 17 events with a total of only $1, 124.
