SuChHope (full name Sub-Saharan Children’s Hope Trust) was founded in 2011 by Henry Chitsenga (a Zimbabwe Achievers Award winner in 2014 for services to education and philanthropy). SuChHope currently looks after about 500 orphans and underprivileged children from all age groups. All its work is based on the mantra of “teaching a man to fish…”, because it believes empowering people has more long-term benefits than giving them hand-outs. It is wholly funded by regular and one-off donations from individuals, and this is where the 10K race comes in.
Masimba Zata, the Fundraising Coordinator at SuChHope said, “SuChHope first took part in the race in 2012 with 6 runners, raising £2,500. Last year, 24 runners took part; raising £4,500 in the process. We are hoping to go one better this year, and have 50 runners raising money for the children. We also want people to realise that even the smallest of donations makes a huge difference to the lives of these children. £15 pays a child’s primary school tuition fees for a whole term. That’s less than a “Full Platter” at Nando’s! By making a small sacrifice, we can all make a huge difference to the futures of these children and – ultimately – the futures of their communities”.
