Rice buys voters

Mugabe has said nothing about the violence in Hurungwe. Perhaps he approves. The rice that he received on his Far Eastern begging trips – donated for the poor – is now being used to buy voters.

Opposition parties and pressure groups look on, with that ‘let them kill each other’ mindset. But the chaos in these by-elections should be seen as an indicator of what is likely to occur in 2018.

What is also quite worrying is that, come June 11th, the morning after the polls, regional observers will happily stamp their seal of approval before flying back to their own countries. Under the circumstances, we may as well have not bothered with the polls, especially when the country’s resources are strained.
