In an incident that has shocked many, a 73-year old man from Zimuto communal lands has died after fasting for almost a month.
Reinfirst Manyuka of Summertone village in Zimuto died after he went into the nearby forest and fasted for 30 days before he died due to hunger. His relatives told The Zimbabwean that he packed his church garments and went into the nearby forest to fast and pray. He was found dead on July 16 after fasting for almost 30 days.
His body was taken to Masvingo general hospital mortuary where a post mortem revealed he had died of hunger. It could not be established which church he belonged to. Masvingo police spokeman Assistant Inspector Nkululeko Nduna confirmed the incident.
“We cannot outlaw fasting because cases of people dying while fasting are very uncommon,†he said. Fasting is part of many religious observances and is practiced globally. It is the abstinence from all food and liquid for a defined period.
