Chipeta shines

He is employed to primarily stop goals from hitting the back of his net, but Zimbabwean international defender Eric Chipeta has gone beyond that – making sure they hit the opposing nets.

The former Hwange FC defender has been in excellent form for Absa Premiership side, Chippa United, for who he has scored three goals in six matches, including a brace against Platinum Stars last week.

The three goals have seen the Zimbabwean go third on the top scorers’ charts – just two behind Zambian striker Collins Mbesuma, the current leading scorer who at the weekend scored his second brace in two games. Also ahead of Chipeta is gangling Ajax Cape Town striker, Nathan Paulse, who has hit the target four times thus far, but the Warriors hard man is the only defender to have achieved that feat so far in the league – making him the envy of even some of the so-called good strikers.

It was unfortunate however, that Chipeta’s brace last week came on a losing cause, as Chippa United ended 2-3 losers to current log leaders, Platinum Stars at the Moruleng Stadium on Tuesday.

The goals should have however, given the Chilli Boys some hunger, as they followed that loss with a 2-1 win over visiting Polokwane City at the Nelson Mandela bay Stadium just three days later, with Chipeta again holding the fort in defence.

Since his first game for the South African side, the right back has done a sterling job on the Cape side.
