MSU registrar protests

But finance director is not at work

The registrar of MSU has demanded that The Zimbabwean retract its story in last week’s issue headlined  “Midlands State University suspends finance director” -  insisting that it is incorrect.

“We believe that journalism ethics demand that all publications be fair, balanced and be verified from the relevant sources to ensure that the repute of individuals and organisations is not impaired,” says the letter signed by registrar Erasmus Mupfiga.

The Zimbabwean  did contact and quoted in the original article the university’s highest authority – council chairman Canaan Dube – who confirmed to our reporter that the finance director, Mamelo Moyo, had indeed been suspended.

Over the weekend, the Sunday News re-published The Zimbabwean’s   story and sought comment from Mupfiga, who was unhelpful and would neither confirm nor deny the story: “On that my friend I do not have a comment. Send me your questions through e-mail and I will forward them to the Vice-Chancellor and see if he is willing to talk about it,” he said.

According to the Sunday News vice chancellor Professor Ngwabi Bhebe declined to comment. “Come to the office,” he said but later refused to entertain this reporter, reported the newspaper.
