Police breakup war veterans meeting

HARARE resembled a warzone Thursday mid-morning after police fired teargas on war veterans who were gathered at the City Sports Center for what they said was a “crunch indaba”.

police officersA group led by war veterans minister Christopher Mutsvangwa, who doubles up as war veterans national chairman and reportedly rooting for VP Emmerson Mnangagwa, had planned a meeting “to affirm the 2014 congress decision that Mutsvangwa is our leader and show support for President Robert Mugabe”.

First Lady, Grace Mugabe, is reportedly leading the other faction bitterly opposed to Mnangagwa in the Zanu PF succession struggles.

Police, however, came out in full force and ordered the war veterans to disperse. The veterans and police details engaged in running battles amid flying obscenities.

Reports also indicated skirmishes between police and war veterans at Lupane in Matabeleland North although this is yet to be verified.
