OK. Enough is enough. A perfect weekend break away TOTALLY ruined by the plethora of road blocks on the way home. Quite literally one after the other all the way from Makuti to Harare. Some were within hundreds of metres from each other. They are quite simply desperate to fine any and everyone. I am incensed by the injustice dealt to this one young woman at a Chinhoyi roadblock.
They were told that their 3rd number plate on their trailer was ‘defaced’. When they argued the woman police officer became rude and abusive. So much so that their 3 young daughters in the car began to cry with genuine fear. The mother decided to video the ranting policewoman. Next thing she is handcuffed in front of her screaming children and placed under a tree while her husband and children are escorted to Chinoyi polce station. When we got there she was so distraught i didn’t know what to do.
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. A young mother handcuffed and under arrest over a sticker. She wanted to use our phone to contact her husband and children. When we went and spoke to the officers there the police woman took over and started shouting at us too. She was extremely rude. We asked her to identify herself. She said she didn’t have her ID with her. Eventually we were able to persuade them to let us take the woman and one of the officers in our car to the Chinhoyi police station to be reunited with her family rather than sit out alone under a tree handcuffed. This is enough.
What has happened to our humility? Where is our dignity, our pride, our compassion? Where is respect for a mother and her children? Is the desire to harass honest tax paying citizens so great that we can handcuff a young mother in front of her 3 screaming daughters over an allegedly tampered with 3rd plate. What on earth is going on? This is 2016. We are supposed to be going forward.
Not back. Incidentally I was also fined $20 for tampered with 3rd number plate on my trailer. Evidentally today was the day for 3rd number plates. Funny how we’d gone through over 40 road blocks on the way there and back and not one of them had picked it up. I’m truly disgusted. – What’sup Harare Facebook Page
