Kaguvi theatre group wins competition

The Kaguvi Training Centre’s theatre group is flying high after winning the provincial final of the two-day Midlands competition held at Kaguvi centre hall on Tuesday.

cultureThe competition drew a total of seven vocational training institutions from within the province. The winners will now advance to the national competition to be held in Mashonaland.

The Kaguvi arts group will represent Midland Province at the national Sports, Arts and Culture Gala organised annually by the Ministry of Youth, Indigenisation and Empowerment. This year’s theme is ‘Harnessing talent for youth through sport, arts and culture ‘.

Other participants from all corners of the Province were outclassed by the winners’ who’s excellent Mhande dancing competency, their public speaking demonstrated through marvellous impromptu speeches and their five star acting performance won them first place in all the categories.

Kaguvi Vocational training Centre’s Shona play entitled ‘Siphunyisiwe’ was presented with a high degree of proficiency and dexterity that kept the audience on the edge of their seats as the fifteen member group stunned revellers with well choreographed scenes.

For those of our citizens who often prefer foreign, western culture and who have turned away from their own cultural values, the multi-talented Kaguvi theatre performers depicted the far reaching and positive results of empowering and nurturing the youth, and girls in particularly, by supporting them academically and culturally.

This was stunningly portrayed by actress, Tracy Makwerere as the character ‘Siphunyisiwe’ who, although going to Germany for academic purposes, never forgets her old traditions, value systems and culture. The character believes that culture is vitally important to the growth of individuals and communities. Even in a foreign land she does not change the way she speaks, behaves and responds.

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe Midlands Programmes Officer, Honour Muvango, one of the three judges, acknowledged all  the members of the cast with special mention to Makwerere, Trever Ncube, Siphunyisiwe’s father, ‘Chasura’ an alcoholic who does not value the empowerment of his daughter and actress, Chipo Dakwa for her role as Siphunyisiwe’s mother. A pat at the back for enthralling the audience with their superb performance as well as their exquisite use of both Shona and English.
