Mabvuku successfully defends Mazowe MAFLICG Chess Festival

Mabvuku high school are the winners of the 2016 edition of the Mazowe MAFLICG Chess festival which was held at Mazowe High school on 27 May 2016.

chess2The team won this tourney a third time in a row.The team comprising of Munyaradzi Thom on board one, Solomon Chimuzura on board two, Eric Guzani on board three and Trevor Macheka on board four won all their games of the tourney. The tournament had 5 rounds of play.

They shrugged off their stiffest competition from Zengeza 1 C team which they narrowly beat 2,5-1,5. Kudakwashe Zimbowa drew against Munyaradzi Thom in a blitz ending which was very pulsating and mouth-watering.The other two games on boards two and three were also draws and Trevor Macheka got the all important point for the boys who had to sweat for the victory.

The team also dismissed Prince Edward B team 4 nil, so was St. Alberts before defeating their archrivals Mufakose 2 High 3,5-0,5 it was only Farai Hamandishe who salvaged a draw against Munyaradzi Thom on board one.The team won a floating shield, 3 chess sets a DGT clock for the school and $80 for the team. Erick Guzani was the best player on board 3 while Trevor Macheka was the best player on board four. Another interesting game pitted Prince Edward A team and Mufakose 2 A team which PE lost 3-1 in a very interesying clash. Luberto is the only one who salvaged a win for Prince Edward.

On the other hand the hosts were beaten 4 nil by Prince Edward A team. Zengeza 1 C team came second while Mufakose 2 A team came third. Mufakose 2 A was tied together with their junior team, but had better board points than the second string side. There were thirty-three teams that took part in the open boys section, which was a very encouraging turnout.

Meanwhile in the girls section Mufakose 2 Girls team won the section ,though they took it away from St. Alberts they were tied on first position and separated on butcholtz. Both teams won 4 games and drew one, while Zengeza 2 came third with 3 winsand one draw.

Murewa high girls team won 2 and drew two, while Oriel Girls high who were led by Marcia Dzimba won one and drew 3 and lost one. Mabvuku girls team won two games and lost three. The girls are beginning to get some confidence and hope that they will catch their male counterparts. The game of chess is getting popular in schools and there is hope to get more Titled players in Zimbabwe if this conyinues at this rate.

FA Chimbamu was the Tournament Director he was assisted by Munashe Ziome in the running of the tourney as well as the hosting teachers Mr Silver and Mutowembwa Maurice.
