Gunman threatens refugees

The man was finally overpowered by the refugees, mostly from Zimbabwe, who are sheltering at the church. Johannesburg Metro Police, who attended to the case, failed to make any arrest - despite the presence of the accused with his weapon. We spent the whole night trying to report and open the

case but they kept referring us from Hillbrow to Johannesburg Central. Some of the police even tried to arrest us for being illegally in the country. The police continue to give flimsy excuses for not attending to the case until around 3.am on Saturday, said one young man who refused to named.

Metro police failed to take action against the culprit and it is baffling the way the way they treat the case, said another man. The gunman was finally arrested at 4.00pm with his gun and accused the refugees of staying at the church without paying rent.

Foreigners in South Africa, especially from Zimbabwe, complain of rampant xenophobia. The South Africa Police Services is also accused of ignoring such attacks, fuelling the perception that SA government is working with the Mugabe regime to harass Zimbabweans there. – CAJ News
