Sports stars scoop 23 medals at All Africa Games
TEAM Zimbabwe scooped a total of 23 medals and finished 8th overall at the 9th All Africa Games that ended in Algiers, Algeria, last week.
Most of Zimbabwe's medals were won by United States-based, Olympic swimming champion Kirsty Covent

ry, who collected seven gold medals.
Coventry won the 100-metre backstroke by setting a new All Africa Games record of 1 minute, 1,28 seconds. She also won the 800-metre freestyle in 8:43.89, another Games record.
The swimming sensation was denied a medal – though it would have been silver – when her team was disqualified from the 4×100-metre relay for a false start on the third leg.
About 8,000 athletes and officials from 52 African countries vied for the medals in 27 sports at the Games, nicknamed ‘Algiers II’ as it is the second time Algeria hosted the sporting gala. The first was in 1978.
Adding to the Games’ prestige is the fact that it is part of the qualifiers for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, in some sports. The Games ran from July 11 to July 23. Football group matches had begun ahead of the opening ceremony.
