On April 21 CNN reported that Tsvangirai had not only urged the UN to intervene in Zimbabwe but also to convene a special court to try Mugabe and his illegitimate regime for human rights abuses and crimes against humanity. Given Mugabe’s ruthless repression of the electoral will of the majority, the change in Tsvangirai’s rhetoric is hardly surprising. In particular Tsvangirai’s call reflects the utter disdain in which his party
holds the SADC and its leader, Thabo Mbeki.Â
By failing to act against Mugabe’s obvious attempt to subvert yet another democratic rejection of Zanu-PF, Mbeki now bears responsibility for Mugabe’s bloody actions in Zimbabwe.
Mbeki’s procrastination has become Mugabe’s strength. The rising toll of atrocities perpetrated by Mugabe’s thugs against MDC supporters is a tragedy Mbeki had within his power
to prevent. Mbeki is a disgrace to everything his African renaissance is supposed represent and to the tenets of the liberation stuggle he and his ilk claim to venerate. He deserves to be in the
dock with Mugabe.
