Edwin Gwara was attacked on Thursday while riding on the back of a truck heading for Murehwa centre, a former stronghold of the Zanu (PF) opposition party. As the truck left for the township it was pelted with stones by a crowd of young thugs and Gwara was hit on the head.
A police spokesman said four people had been arrested, but had not been asked if they were members of Zanu (PF). The incident was not an isolated one. Tensions have been running high since Zanu (PF)’s stunning electoral loss on March 29.
War veterans at the direct urging of Robert Mugabe, civilian head of the military junta, are staging the attacks in Murehwa.
Rival supporters have clashed throughout the country, leaving scores of injuries and arrests on both sides. The MDC, which has won Parliament and now controls the councils, said Zanu (PF) had “unleashed a wave of terror on the country” to justify Mugabe declaring a state of emergency.
Mugabe squares off against MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai in a presidential election run-off scheduled for June 27.
