As President Kibaki declared food shortage a national disaster and appealed for international help, ministers in his Government and MPs have not cut down on flamboyant

Prime Minister Raila Odinga led four ministers and six MPs to a hunger-stricken Nyatike constituency for a homecoming ceremony for local MP Eddick Anyanga at the weekend.

Raila and Lands Minister James Orengo landed at Lwanda Konyango Secondary School in helicopters, as starving residents watched.
Then came ministers Dalmas Otieno (Public Service), Otieno Kajwang' (Immigration) and Dr Paul Otuoma (Fisheries) in their fuel guzzling cars.

MPs John Mbadi, John Pesa, Cyprian Omolo, Oyugi Magwanga, Ogindo Otieno and Millie Odhiambo followed in their equally environment-unfriendly vehicles.

Salivated

Surprisingly, villagers were locked out of the MP's home compound and salivated as Raila and other guests feasted.

They then proceeded to the school for the ceremony, where a large crowd waited. The cake cutting session almost ended in chaos, as villagers scrambled for a slice.

During the function, two cows, several goats and sheep were presented as gifts for the guests. Raila was given a bull and some goats, while other MPs got either a goat or a sheep.

The group avoided the hunger topic in their speeches and instead concentrated on discussing a plot' to undermine Raila by implicating him in graft.

Some revisited the Muthaura-Raila war, which was of little importance to the hungry crowd.

Raila said Government was putting in place measures to save Kenyans from starvation.

He explained that in the next month, the Government would supply fertilisers to all cereal board depots in the country, saying the move aimed at ensuring farmers access farm inputs and improve production.

The PM also said plans were underway to start irrigation projects in Nyanza Province.
