Kenya: Coalition on the spot over corruption

An MP demanded an explanation on why cases of corruption had increased.

The ministry should also tell us how many graft cases are being investigated, the involvement of civil servants in the cases and how many they are.

Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs minister Martha Karua promised to issue a comprehensive statement on the matter next Thursday.

The Grand Coalition has been dogged by at least six major corruption scandals in the one year it has been in power. The most recent include disappearance of oil from the national pipeline and revelations that a cartel was to blame for irregular dealings in maize from the National Cereals and Produce Board.

When he sworn-in in December 2002, President Kibaki said that corruption would be a thing of the past in his tenure.

The Kenya Tourism Board is still reeling from revelations that its former managing director, Dr Ong'ong'a Achieng', authorised Sh43 million in irregular payments.
