Malawi enrols 5.8m voters

Blantyre - Malawi has enrolled 5.8 million voters ahead of the May 19 general elections, the Southern African country's electoral commission has said.

"We have hit 5.8 million voters mark. Everybody is happy," commission spokesperson Fegus Lipenda said.

The registration drive began in August to avoid a repeat of the chaos
which followed the 2004 election when a court-ordered check saw a
million names cut from the register.

The May legislative and presidential polls will be the fourth
multi-party elections since the end of Kamuzu Banda’s dictatorial rule
in 1994.

President Bingu wa Mutharika, in power since 2004 faces a strong
challenge from two key opposition figures, his predecessor Bakili
Muluzi and John Tembo, leader of the Malawi Congress Party.
