Bona is studying under a different name to protect her identity but
this did not stop journalists from uncovering the truth. The revelation
stunned many Zimbabweans, particularly given Robert Mugabe's hypocrisy
in using past speeches to attack people living and working in the
diaspora as being unpatriotic.
ZINASU, which represents all national college and university student's
unions in the country, is furious that Mugabe, who presided over the
destruction of the education system, sent his daughter to study
outside. ZINASU want Bona to study back in Zimbabwe and see first hand
what her father has done to the education system and country as a
whole. A letter from ZINASU to the Chinese Embassy in Harare was
recently published by Hong Kong's Sunday Morning Post newspaper.
Spokesman Blessing Vava wrote, The state of our education system is so
deplorable that the president has seen it fit to trust the Chinese for
the education of his daughter whilst ordinary students are failing to
get decent education.'
With news of Robert Mugabe and his family having bought a US$5,6
million house in Hong Kong it does not look like the students will get
their way. Apart from strong ties between China and Mugabe's regime the
purchase of the house might give an indicator to what Mugabe thinks
will be a safe retirement destination, should he be forced to flee the
wheels of justice in Zimbabwe. Although China controls Hong Kong in
terms of its Defence and Foreign Affairs, all other issues have been
left to it to self-govern.' The area has its own currency, legal and
political systems in place. Whether it could make a decision on Bona,
independent of Chinese influence, is doubtful.Â
