National basketball championships set for May

basket_ballHARARE - The national basketball championship will take place on the first of May in Bulwayo city.

The draw for the tournament that is hosted by the Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) will take place a day before kickoff.
Participating teams expected to pay US$20 registration fee, while the Union’s seven provinces will fork out US$30 to take part in the tournament.
The JBC men and women’s teams are the defending champions having won the title in last year’s edition of the national basketball extravaganza, held at Harare’s Richwood Park.

The men’s team also proved a force to reckon with in the Harare league, which ended two weeks ago. They stand a chance of showing the local basketball followers who rules the courts. But Kings men’s team who were capped the Bulawayo champions last week, who have the advantage of playing before their home crowd, are expected to pose the greatest threat to the defending champions.

Stiff competition is expected in the women’s division where 2009 HBA champions, Varsity Leopards, defending national champions, JBC, Bulawayo giants Sentinel and Stanbic Mavericks all have capacity to emerge winners.
Meanwhile the BUZ is expected to hold elections on July 31 to select a new executive in office.
