Accusations against the four are that in February, they mounted a fake road block along the Orapa-Francistown high way. Nthoi, who was driving towards Francistown, stopped his vehicle at the scene to remove the stones, but the four Zimbabweans who were hiding appeared from a nearby bush, grabbed and strangled him to death before fleeing with his two cell phones, car radio and some cash.
If convicted, the four defendants could be sentenced to death or life in prison. Their trial means there are now 16 Zimbabweans currently on trial for murder in Botswana.
This comes after police in the country last week issued a statement saying: After failing to secure jobs in Botswana, most Zimbabweans are resorting to crime and this has seen an increase in crime in Botswana.
About 3000 Zimbabweans are deported each week, only to turn around and sneak back through illegal entry points dotted along the border.
