Schoolgirls seek victory

netball_girlThe Zimbabwe national netball team hopes to pull a surprise win against regional heavyweights, Mozambique girls, in the inaugural Zone Six Under 16 Championships, at City Sports Centre, today.

The local schoolgirls demolished Swaziland 119-14 in the first match of the six-day tournament before suffering an emotional 68-77 defeat at the hands of neighbours, South Africa.

Coached by Sikumbuzo Ndlovu, the hosts hope to prove an emerging strong force to reckon with against Mozambique who have already posted a victory against South Africa and Angola. The tournament will decide the regions two representative to the African Youth Championships set for Senegal (girls) and Mozambique (boys) at dates yet to be announced by FIBA.

All was not well for the Zimbabwean schoolboys who fell to a 91-93 defeat against South Africa in their first match, on Saturday, under the guidance of coach, Ladi Munetsi. They went on to lose 64-74 to regional powerhouse, Angola.
