He expressed shock at the extent at which Zimbabwe has collapsed describing the situation as dire and horrendous. How could such a beautiful country in a few short years be changed into hell on earth, he said.
On whether President Mugabe will finally heed to the call for him to step down, the anti-apartheid hero expressed doubt. He however, said he was positive that something good may come up out of the present Zanu pf and MDC marriage. But now we have what may be the best chance of salvaging and helping Zimbabwe return to her former glory in this government of national unity, he added.
Bishop Tutu has been one of the prominent African voices that have consistently called for President Mugabe to step down arguing this will pave way for a genuine reconstruction of Zimbabwe. The seemingly reluctance from Zanu pf to embrace true reforms has dealt a blow to Prime minister Morgan Tsvangirais efforts to get meaningful financial assistance from the West.

JOHANNESBURG - South African Nobel Peace price winner and President Mugabes critic Bishop Desmond Tutu has described Zimbabwe as hell on earth. Tutu who was speaking at a literary festival in Wales on Thursday, was adamant that the only hope of a truly reformed Zimbabwe could be seen after the next democratic elections.
