Minister won’t return home

JOHANNESBURG An estimated three million Zimbabweans or a quarter of the countrys population are living outside the country, but it appears Zimbabweans are not the only ones fleeing their country for the proverbial greener pastures abroad. The South African Press Association (SAPA) reported last week that Ethiopias state minister for communication affairs refused to return home from the United Sates after an official visit.

According to the report, Ermias Legesse was issued with an 11-day visa and left for the US in the second week of June, but had by last week not returned home apparently after deciding to stay in America forever. “He didn’t report back, but there is nothing political in that,” an Ethiopian government official told the South African news agency. “He has chosen to stay there. It seems he has dreamt about going to the US,” said the official, adding: “Sometimes strange things happen.”

Ermias, who is in his thirties, was appointed to the communication post earlier this year, according to the report. The US embassy in Addis Ababa declined to comment on the matter, but a diplomatic source said Ermias had not been reachable for several days”.
