RBZ falls on hard times

rbzHARARE - The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), which was characterized by lavish spending before the formation of the inclusive government and the dollarization of the economy, has fallen on hard times. Reserve bank workers who spoke to The Zimbabwean this week complained that they were no longer enjoying the luxuries they once had.

Before the dollarization of the economy, we used to be served with food similar to a five star hotel in our canteen, but now we are served sadza and boiled cabbage. The bank can no longer afford to buy toilet tissue, to the extent that workers are now using newspapers, said a worker.

The bank employees said the central bank had also failed to give them their monthly groceries since the dollarisation of the economy started.

Every month, each worker is entitled to groceries, but for the past several months, the bank has failed to give us them, citing shortages of foreign currency. Monthly fuel allocations have been cut also, said another worker.

Among the perks that central bank employees once enjoyed, were top of the range vehicles, laptops and contract mobile lines. All of these have been withdrawn.

The bank has often been accused of supplying pro-Zanu (PF) organisations with funds and vehicles.

What is more disturbing is that the RBZ Governor had even bought expensive vehicles and houses for individuals at ZBC and the Herald in Harare,” said another bank employee.
