Human rights abuses must stop

EDITOR - The recent visit to South Africa by US Foreign Secretary, Hillary Clinton, is a good opportunity in exposing and addressing ongoing human rights abuses in Zimbabwe. Human rights abuses especially in farms and villages must be halted. Farm workers, villagers and ordinary activists are still vulnerable in Zimbabwe. The recent revelations on the Dispatches programme aired on Channel Four testifies evidence of gross human rights violations which will normally go unnoticed in remote part

The Government of National Unity must take full responsibility in restoring peace and order. The unity government has an obligation to promote and protect human rights in Zimbabwe. The United States should continue to step up diplomatic efforts through South Africa and the Sub region in ensuring that peace and justice returns to Zimbabwe.
The rising numbers of MDC MPs and activists recently arrested on trumped charges is cause for concern. Such a scenario only serves to widen cracks in the government of national unity. Furthermore the arrest of university students who were trying to air genuine grievances is unlawful. Zimbabwe will only be able to attract international support and investment when the prevailing situation returns to normal.
I concur with David Kaczynski when he says: Weve have got to take back the ideal of justice, weve got to take back this principal of human dignity. Weve got to take it back from vengeance, from hatred, weve got to say: look; were all in this together. We are human beings. – ALDRINE VENANCIA CHIRAU, Wolverhampton, UK
