GWAZE WINS EASTER OPEN CHESS TOURNEY

chessInternational Master Robert Gwaze won the Easter Open chess tournament held at Causeway Timeout Restaurant.He scored 8 points out of 9 games only drawing 2 games one against Spencer Masango and Reuben Muza.

Gwaze dismissed top players Elisha Chimbamu, Lewis Kahoba, Mufaro Mangono,and not forgeting the one-hit wonder Elton Mhangarai. spencer Masango had a very good tournament, sharing the first oposition with Gwaze, only to be separated by bucholtz to second place.Lloyd moyo and Reuben Muzared Shared the third spot with 7,5points.While on the fifth position Elisha Chimbamu,Anyway Zhuwawu,Byron Gurajena,Victor Chimbamu,Gerald Mhondiwa and Rugare Muchena all had 7 points.Interesting was rather the return of yours truly to the game after 5 years of not taking part in any competitive tournament.

The best ladies prize went to Rhoda Masiyazi and Trish Patsanza who both scored to claim the best ladies category prizes.

Elisha Thabo of Prince Edward school got 5 points to scoop the best scholar award,followed by Tapiwa Gora of Churchill High school.

Lawrence Tavagwisa was the second best under 14 with 4 points,while Donald Chiwundura was the best under 14 with 5 points out of 9 games played.

Mpumelelo Moyo was the youngest player of the tournament.He scored 4 points and is only 7 years of age.Former Champion Jeviuos Kampiya failed to get a prize by half a point.He is making a come back to his winning ways it seems.

International Master Kudzanai Mamombe scored 6 points which shows that the tournament had stiff competition.

The tournament started on Good Friday and ended on the 5th of April.There was an amazing attendance at this year’s Easter Open Tournament with a turnout of 138 players taking part.

Meanwhile some of Zimbabwe’s top players including the winner Gwaze will be participating this weekend at the Botswana chess open.
