Zim low in BMI rank

JOHANNESBURG - International business think tank, Business Monitor International (BMI), said despite some improvements in Zimbabwes economy, the country remained rooted at the bottom of its Business Environment Ratings (BERs).

In the Q4 (fourth quarter) 2010 update of BMI’s regional BERs, which assess 19 key markets in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region, Zimbabwe has not improved its standing, remaining last. Though some of its economic indicators are somewhat improved, the country is unlikely to push up the regional rankings, in the medium term at least, BMI said in a statement this week.

It said the low ranking was a result of unfavourable political, regulatory and other factors, including the negligible per-capita expenditure on pharmaceuticals, the crumbling public healthcare system and the prevalence of counterfeiting.

Globally, Zimbabwe ranks second from bottom, ahead only of Nicaragua.

Meanwhile, the think tank expressed concern at the countrys so-called indigenisation laws saying these would scuttle economic development.
