Gamu fans protest against deportation

gamu_nhenguScores of fans of X Factor contestant, Gamu Nhengu, have protested in her street against plans to deport the starlet and her family. The Zimbabwean who exited the ITV show on Sunday is fighting a legal battle with her family for leave to remain in the UK after the Home Office said they had outstayed their visa.

The demonstration in Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire, came as lawyers for the 18-year-olds family confirmed they are seeking a judicial review into the decision. It is understood the family had been receiving state benefits, including working tax credit, against visa rules after her mother Nokuthula, 38, came to Scotland to study nursing at Stirling University.

Nokuthula, who has since qualified, had also outstayed her visa, which expired on August 29, along with that of Gamu and her brothers Milton, 11, and nine-year-old Marty.

Miss Nhengus X Factor exit reportedly followed talks between the shows producers and immigration officials, but yesterday there was no sign of the family.

Neighbour Isobel McLean said: I think its a shame. She shouldnt have been put out of the show anyway, she was much better than the other three girls.

Shes a lovely girl as well, quite a shy wee thing. I dont know the family well really, but I used to hear her singing out the back when I was hanging my washing out.

Holding hand-painted banners saying Gamu ur the X Factor and We love you Gamu, protestor Janet Kane, 77, from nearby Alva, said: I got the paper this morning and it had all about Gamu in it. My daughter said mum, Im going to Tillicoultry to see Gamu so we jumped in the car.

I thought she was a great singer so its all very sad.

Council worker Diana Sinclair, 40, travelled to the street with her husband and 15-year-old daughter to show her support for Gamu.

She said: If Gamu were given the chance, I really think she would win the contest. Then she could look after her mother and brother. Shes got the talent for it. Its just nice to give our support.
