HARARE - The Zanu (PF) wing of the government announced that it is going to start another fast track implementation of the so-called Wildlife-Based Land Reform Policy. According to the state controlled Herald newspaper, 59 people are set to benefit from the fast track exercise or share with previous white owners. Areas where the reforms are set to take place are Masvingo where 21 people have been allocated leases, and the Midlands and Matebeleland regions.
Parks and Wildlife Management Authority director-general, Vitalis Chadenga, said: “Implementation of Wildlife-Based Land Reform remained one of the unfinished businesses of the country’s land reform programme. The policy has been on our shelves for more than five years and for a variety of reasons, its implementation had remained elusive.
There are genuine fears that grabbing conservancies which are already under siege from poachers would further cripple the sector that was one of the major tourist attractions in the country. Tony Saxon
