The Dendera legacy

HARARE - The Dendera Music Empire seems to be growing following the release of a new album by the late Simon
Chimbetu's nephew, Richard Sakala.

The latest release Kura Uone by Glen View-based music star, Sakala with his Maungira Boys group, is 100 percent a Dendera music piece, set to make a mark in that competitive music scene. The sound is similar to that of the late Dendera music maestro Chimbetu, who died in April 2005.

When Chimbetu died he left a legacy to Naison, his younger brother. Unfortunately, Naison also passed away in March 2008. Another younger brother, Brian then led the group but suffered ill-health and died two years later. Allan, again a younger brother, was asked to lead the group but it was ephemeral as there was a split in the group. Chimbetu’s son Sulumani took over the original Orchestra Dendera Kings, while Allan built another group using the same name.

Dendera music heir Tryson, son of the late Naison, inherited the Marxist Brothers group – the original group of Simon and Naison – and has already recorded two albums. While attention is given to Sulumani out of sympathy, Tryson is likely to rule the roost, fast becoming a favorite to many Dendera Music fans.

However, confident Sakala says, I started top play Dendera music long back when uncle Sam [Simon Chimbetu] was still alive. Each time Simon used to come to our home he would give me music notes and the release of my first album Ngatibude

Pachena was through his assistance and encouragement. Sakala has vowed to take Dendera Music to another level.

I want to continue doing justice to the genre that my uncle pioneered. Iam happy with the response that we are receiving in our live shows and we will make sure that Dendera music never dies, he added. Sakala has released five albums so far: Get Ready, Ngatibude Pachena, Be Mine, Varegererei and Kura Uone.
