Gunda’s widow pleads for divine justice

Brigadier General Paul Armstrong Gunda's widow has commemorated the 4th anniversary of her husband's death with a plea for his murderers to be brought to book.

As first reported by The Zimbabwean in 2007, the former commander of the Presidential Guard was suspected of being one of the kingpins in a murky plot to overthrow President Robert Mugabe.

Gunda died in 2007 and was declared a national hero. But it is believed he was murdered and then driven to a rail crossing near Marondera, where the mangled wreck of his car was found after colliding with a train.

Gunda's widow on Monday took out a full page advert in the state-run Herald newspaper repeating her claims that her husband had been killed and that the assassins must face punishment from God.

"Be not silent, God of my praise. Appoint a wicked man against him let an accuser bring him to trial,” said the emotionally-charged advert by the grieving widow.

Gunda's son, Tawanda John, said in the same advert: "Don’t really need to say much about you that the world doesn't know already, you let your actions talk for you. You set an excellent example of how heroes should be."

The bitter messages come amidst an escalating conflict between the widow and the army over the bid to evict her from the Suburbs in Bulawayo. The army laid claim to Gunda's family home – a nice crib, with a swimming pool and two boreholes, and furnished by the army.

The army says in court papers it needs the house for the new commander – Phillip Sibanda – who said Mrs Gunda was not a soldier and had no claim to the house. The court sessions were held in camera.
