The church which traditionally converges at Bernard Mizeki Shrine every year for the commemorations, gathered at the Show Grounds for the second year running as the shrines remained a preserve of the Bishop Nolbert Kunonga faction.
Police sealed off the shrines at Benard Mizeki College, eight kilometres out of Marondera along Mrewa road from the Gandiya faction despite a High Court ruling that both groups share church facilities around the country. Mizeki was murdered at the site in 1896 and his body is believed to have disappeared into heaven under the guidance of angels.
“Everybody knows Kunonga rebelled against the main church to form his own faction. The fact that he is holding on to church properties does not deter us from preaching God. For us it is business as usual and Kunonga is not a factor regarding our church activities. Whether we preach in a desert, under a tree or in a cave following grabbing of our church buildings by Kunonga would not make us less Anglicans. After all, we are the mainstream Anglican Movement since Kunonga was leading a dwindling breakaway faction,” said a church leader.
Notable respected Anglican Bishops such as Peter Hatendi graced the commemorations, which attracted participants from across the region.
