The potentially explosive tournament is scheduled to be held between 4 September and 17 October where most activity is expected at Cardiff’s 74 500-seater Millennium Stadium.

England won the bid to host the world championship extravaganza ahead of Italy and South Africa.

Assistant Sables Coach Cyprian Mandenge told The Zimbabwean ahead of the Uganda Victoria tie that the present in-form team can lift the cup.

“We are doing all that we can to ensure that we qualify for the world cup and I am confident we can make it there,” Mandenge said.

He noted that Sables, who finished on second position in last year’s Victoria Cup, have plans to increase regional and international friendly matches as part of the World Cup preparations.

“We have not been playing Test Rugby for some time and we are happy with our participation in the Victoria Cup. We are taking the matches serious but the broader focus should be on the World Cup,” said the soft-spoken coach.

Sables are currently enjoying a winning streak in the Victoria Cup having upset Kenya 25-15 at Kiadondo and walloped Kenya 42-24 in Harare in a return match.

The team is heavily powered by the youthful combination of Charles Jiji, Tatenda Karuru, Kuda Chiwanza and Tom Nelson who took part in the just ended juniors World Cup.

Veteran forwards Jacque Letawo and Shingi Mpofu have seen the team being promoted into Africa’s A1 group consisting of the four best outfits in the continent.
