Rumours had been circulating in judicial circles that Sandura, who has been Supreme Court judge for decades, was planning to take voluntary early retirement and could effectively cease work at the beginning of next year.
"The truth is that I will retire from the Supreme Court in the near future upon attaining the age of retirement," Sandura said in a statement issued by the registrar of the Supreme Court.
The judge is highly esteemed in the eyes of law-abiding people, both within and beyond the borders of Zimbabwe, as a man of the highest integrity. He has resisted handing down judgements to suit the political thinking of the executive.
Our source, who declined to be named, said Sandura had opted for early retirement following run-ins with the government over verdicts unpalatable to the regime.
"He regrets the current circumstances which constrain him," he said. Sandura rose to prominence as the chairman of the Sandura Commission, which probed the involvement of top government officials in the Willowgate Scandal.
The scandal revolved around corrupt dealings in vehicles that deprived the country of massive revenue. The experienced judge, who has served on both the High Court and Supreme Court benches, has on several times broken ranks with other judges by handing down dissenting judgements.
