Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe Secretary-General, Raymond Majongwe, told The Zimbabwean that the much-publicised soccer events being sponsored by politicians from President Robert Mugabe's discredited party were a ploy to circumvent a government ban on political activity in schools.
“Every other (Zanu-PF) politician is having a soccer tournament at schools. Under the guise of training for football, it becomes a torture base,” Majongwe said.
Among the politicians who have recently launched so-called soccer tournaments are information minister and politburo member Webster Shamu, local government minister Ignatius Chombo, deputy planning minister Samuel Undenge and radical women's league official Monica Mutsvangwa.
“Schools must be left out of the political bickering of this country. More teachers and pupils are going to be affected as we gravitate towards elections because these bases seem to be reappearing all over the country,” said Majongwe.
He said had exhausted most options and the matter now required urgent and strong input from the two MDC formations.
“This is a political issue that needs a political solution. The MDCs and other affected parties must prioritize this issue and get involved now,” he said.
