Zuma should not go

EDITOR - It is amazing how Zanu (PF) propaganda machine has assumed another line to oust Jacob Zuma, SADC's point man on Zimbabwe.

With only a few days to go to the 31st Ordinary Sadc Summit of heads of state and government to take place in Luanda, Angola, efforts are being made to have Zuma relieved of his facilitation to the Zimbabwes inter-party dialogue.

This comes as no surprise because Zuma unlike his predecessor Thabo Mbeki has tackled the Zimbabwe crisis head-on, something that has not gone favourably with Zanu (PF) which is seeking to extend its stranglehold on Zimbabwe’s political turf by hook and crook.

Strenuous moves by the erstwhile ruling party to oust Zuma as the current facilitator in the on going negotiations between the three protagonists in the unity government should be resisted. Zanu (PF)’s attempt to use technicalities in its bid to remove the no nonsense Zuma clearly shows that Zuma is the right man for the job. Zanu (PF) wants a pliant person who leans on their side so that they can have their way.

It is surprising that Zanu (PF) alleges that Zuma cannot continue being the facilitator if he assumes the chair of the organ on Politics because in their narrow mind ' he cannot report to himself'. This argument does not hold any water.

For starters, why did Zanu (PF) not raise the same issue when Mbeki was at one time the chair of the organ on politics, defence and security cooperation and the facilitator at the same time. You don't have to be a fundi to know the reason why. Zanu (PF) does not want anyone who can stand up to them. Mbeki's ' quite diplomacy', whatever that means, played into the hands of Mugabe's popularly rejected party.

Zuma’s insistence on reforms before the next plebiscite spells doom for the party of thugs which is allergic to scrutiny. It’s now apparent that Zuma is the nemesis of Mugabe. Zuma and indeed Sadc should stay focussed and keep the momentum to save Zimbabwe from sliding into another failed state.

The people of Zimbabwe deserve a government which is accountable to the electorate. That is the reason why freedom fighters periled their lives in the quest for true democracy, transparency, social justice and rule of law. – Hasani Hasani- LONDON
