Uni project in limbo

Construction of the Gwanda University by the community has been stalled after Zanu (PF) heavies hijacked the project.

Initially, a group of lecturers from Joshua Mqabuko Polytechnic College were in charge of the construction work, but Zanu (PF) officials led by Matabeleland South Governor Angeline Masuku have taken over and thrown the whole project into confusion.

“The idea to build the university is now shrouded in controversy. Those who thought about it wanted to ensure development in the province. However, the politicians, including the governor herself, now want to run the project in order to drum up support for their party and this has created problems,” one of the members of the group that came up with the idea of the project said.

Recently Matabeleland South Provincial Administrator David Mpofu said the project was underway and US$10 000 had been raised. However, sources dismissed the reports questioning where the money had come from.

Gwanda Mayor Lionel De Necker, told The Zimbabwean that the council had allocated land for the construction of the varsity, but to date nothing has been done.

“I am surprised that the university’s construction has not started by now. When this idea was brought to us by a group of lecturers, we saw it as brilliant and I am sure everyone else in the town did. There must be serious problems,” he said.
