I stayed quiet while various people mentioned where the low self–esteem came from – as a child from parents and siblings, from school, during the army days, at work etc. Little was said about the solution.
Eventually, I was asked to share and as the group needed to have the solution to their low self-esteem I spoke about the wrong concepts and how to refocus our minds.
I have mentioned previously that “strongholds” are “mind sets” and so it is in this instance. There is a need to break a particular mindset and replace it with godly thoughts.
What are we supposed to do with these low self-esteem memories? Renounce them? Pray about them? Actually we are told to “forget” them! (Philippians 3:13). We are told to let them go! Instead we are to think about Jesus, about how important we are to him. He considered us worthy to be given us a revelation of Himself, and to draw us to Him. He has chosen us, has brought us into His family, is making Himself known to us.(Philippians 4:8) Out of millions of people He called us to Himself and we have chosen to follow Him and trust Him.
Basically we get low self-esteem because we are looking to self. Self must die (Matthew 16:24). We need to get our eyes off of ourselves and onto Jesus. Jesus must increase and we must decrease. As we meditate on God’s love for us, think about how He has demonstrated that to us. As we begin to see ourselves special to God, loved by God, our response will be one of gratitude and a complete submission to His will for us. We will want to delight Him.
